ikasu upcycles antique and vintage kimono that have served their purpose as clothes, creating new value as art pieces. ikasu takes the gorgeous woven and painted patterns of kimono and obi and turns them into stylish, elegant wall art that combines the traditional with the modern. Blending the fabric with antique kiritansu (chest-of-drawers for kimono) wood, natural materials like branch slices, and traditional gold foiling techniques to imitate kintsugi, ikasu creates art sets and collages that would add not only a unique touch, but also a meaningful symbolism to the interior.

For Valentines Day, ikasu prepared a special collection featuring the art pieces created to praise love and romance in a traditional Japanese way.

Okamoto Lena, ikasu creative director with a degree in Japanese culture studies, selected the traditional patterns and motifs that symbolize love, passion and romance in Japanese tradition, to create art sets and pieces that are meant to bring harmony and romantic atmosphere to places and to people who own them.

The main motifs for Valentine art pieces Collection are:

Crane (Tsuru): In Japan, cranes are believed to symbolize long life and good fortune. As they tend to stay with the same partner, cranes are considered to be also a symbol of faith and devotion.

Plum Blossoms (Ume): Plum blossoms are popular floral motif that represents endurance, strength, and the arrival of spring. They are often associated with the idea of enduring love for their ability to resist cold.

Aoi Hearts: While not directly connected to theme of romance by meaning in Japanese culture, the shape of Aoi (hollyhock) plant leaf shape reminds heart shape, so it was also included to explicitly convey the theme of love. As the Aoi plant grows straight high, it is considered to be a symbol of progress - in marriage or in carrier.

■About ikasu

Giving a Second Life to Kimono.
It is said that within Japanese households, a vast number of kimonos and obis are kept untouched. However, due to the lack of occasions to wear them, the challenges of maintenance, and the need for storage space, more families are disposing of these garments, preventing them from being passed on to the next generation. With the firm belief that kimonos and obis are not just garments but cherished memories of their owners, splendid works of kimono artists, and an integral part of Japan's proud traditional culture, ikasu is passionately engaged in creating artworks that breathe new life into these garments.
Kimonos are often referred to as the “wearable art" and are unique pieces of art created through traditional Japanese techniques. Each garment is meticulously crafted through manual processes, including weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and decoration. ikasu approaches their work with a strong determination to preserve and respect the history, craftsmanship, patterns, and stories embedded in each individual piece. Through this approach, ikasu transforms them into art pieces suitable for contemporary spaces, homes, meditation rooms, hotels, restaurants, thus ensuring that the essence of these garments lives on in a new and meaningful way.

■Creators
A team of artists, including an artist from an advertising company with kimono meister certification, a kimono expert who worked at a famous kimono store for many years, and a furniture craftsman who has produced many upcycled works, are making works by hand in Japan, valuing their beliefs and persistence.
